CICS Hosts Three Summer Youth Programs

This July, the UMass Amherst College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) hosted three summer programs promoting youth STEM participation:

• The UMass Turing Summer Program, a four-week program for local high school students run by Professor and Associate Dean Prashant Shenoy and Professor Deepak Ganesan. See photos from this program.
• The Massenberg STEM Institute, a one-week STEM experience focused on uplifting talented rising 10th graders of color and economic disadvantage. See photos from this program.
• A pre-college course taught by graduate student Alyx Burns as part of UMass Summer Programs: “Circuits, Robotics, and Arduino.” See photos from this program.

CICS faculty also participated in the Girls Inc. “Eureka! at UMass” program hosted by the College of Natural Sciences, which motivates girls to pursue post-secondary education and careers in STEM fields.

“We are so glad to host these fantastic summer programs,” said Laura Haas, dean of the college. “At CICS, we’re proud to support youth STEM efforts—particularly those that inspire women and underrepresented minorities. I hope to see some of the campers back on campus in the coming years as undergraduates. But wherever their future plans bring them, I hope they will remember their time here as one that sparked their interest in science and computing.”
