Research

Professor Nguyen founded and directs the Wireless and Sensor Systems Laboratory (WSSL). His broad research interests are mobile and ubiquitous computing, wireless communication, and embedded systems. His research agenda has focused on Sustainable Autonomous Things (SATs) for the vision of the Internet of Sustainable Medical Things, the Internet of Sustainable Living Things, and the Internet of Sustainable Flying Things. His team develops new techniques in sensor and sensing system development, algorithms, data analytics, signal processing, hardware, and firmware optimization to invent (1) a new class of "medical devices" that can continuously and unobtrusively collect novel and important health data in non-clinical settings, (2) a new class of "living sensors" that can live with plants/animals, and (3) a new class of "unmanned aerial vehicles" that requires extremely low maintenance.

Biography

Ph.D., Computer Science, University of Colorado Boulder (2018), M.S., Electrical and Computer Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University - SKKU (2014), B.S., Electronics and Telecommunications, Vietnam National University - University of Science - HCMUS (2010). Professor Nguyen joined the faculty of the College of Information and Computer Sciences as an Assistant Professor in 2023. Prior to UMass, he was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington from 2020 to 2023. 

Activities & Awards

Professor Nguyen is the recipient of SONY Faculty Innovation Award, CACM Research Highlights 2020, ACM SIGMOBILE Research Highlights 2017, 2020, 2022, UTA CSE Pre-Tenure Research Award 2022, Best Paper Award at ACM MobiCom 2019, Best Paper Runner-up at ACM SenSys 2018, Best Paper Nominee at ACM SenSys 2017, and Best Paper Awards at ACM MobiCom-S3 2016-2017. His research has been funded by National Science Foundation and SONY. He has served as a technical program committee member, workshop chair, and Ph.D. forum chair for multiple flagship conferences in Mobile Computing and Wireless Networking. He frequently serves on multiple review panels at the National Science Foundation.
