U.S. News Ranks CICS Among Top Twenty Computer Science Graduate Programs in the Nation

The College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is ranked among the top twenty graduate computer science programs in the country according to U.S. News and World Report's 2019 edition of Best Graduate Schools. 

The rankings, which were announced today, place CICS at #20, up five spots from its 2014 rank. The college shares the #20 rank with Purdue University, Rice University, University of Southern California, and Yale University.

 "Our rise in the rankings over the past four years owes a great deal to the investment UMass Amherst has made in our new college, increased research activity in important areas of the field, our graduates' accomplishments, and the exceptional quality of our students," said Laura Haas, CICS Dean. "We have our sights set on rising even further." 

The rankings are the result of evaluations done by deans, department heads, and graduate program directors who rate program quality. The surveys were completed by 188 programs in fall 2017.

U.S. News and World Report also evaluates programs in four specialty areas -- Artificial Intelligence, Programming Languages, Systems, and Theory. CICS is ranked #11 in Artificial Intelligence, up one spot from #12 in 2014.
