University Community Invited to Celebrate Career and Accomplishments of CICS' Jim Kurose

The campus community is invited to celebrate the career and accomplishments of Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences Distinguished Professor Emeritus Jim Kurose at a cocktail reception from 3-5 p.m. Friday, April 5, in room 150-151 of the Computer Science Building. An educator and computer networking researcher by trade, Kurose has served in several administrative roles at the university, including interim dean of the College of Natural Sciences and, most recently, as associate chancellor for partnerships and innovation. After 40 years in education, in June 2023 he announced his partial retirement.

In 2015, Kurose took on the role of assistant director at the National Science Foundation, leading the Directorate of Computer and Information Science Engineering for five years, during which time he advised the White House and Congress on cybersecurity, AI and high-performance and quantum computing. He is perhaps most well-known as the co-author, with Keith Ross, of the book “Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach,” which is now in its eighth edition. In recognition of Kurose’s many years of service to UMass Amherst, the computer research community, and the nation, Manning CICS is also raising funds to name a room in his honor in the college’s new building. Gifts can be made online, or contact Ed Welch, executive director of development, for more information at ewelch [at] uma-foundation.org.
