#YearinReview Top 10 Social Media Features of 2021

What a year we’ve had! From major investments in the college, to multiple faculty awards, to fellowships and honors for our graduate and undergraduate students, the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences had no end of excellent news.

From all of that, and based on engagement from our social media channels, here are our Top 10 Social Media Features of 2021.

  1. NSF CAREER Awards
    This year, our college was proud to announce NSF CAREER awards for four of our faculty: Justin Domke, Mohammad Hajiesmaili, Mohit Iyyer, and Cameron Musco. Congrats!
  2. Dean Laura Haas Announces Two Major Investments in the College
    The newly-renamed Robert and Donna Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences received two major investments totalling $95 million.
  3. Kalpesh Krishna Wins Google PhD Fellowship
    Doctoral student Kalpesh Krishna was announced as a 2021 GoogIe PhD Fellowship recipient in recognition of his work in the field of natural language processing. 
  4. Ramesh Sitaraman: Pioneering a Faster, More Reliable Internet
    UMass magazine covered Professor Ramesh Sitaraman's foundational work on content delivery networks (CDNs), which have ensured that the internet has remained fast and reliable despite unprecedented demand.
  5. Manning CICS is in Top 15 of Public Programs, Best Public Program in Northeast
    In this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings, Manning CICS is in the top 15 of the nation's public computer science undergraduate programs—and the top public program in the Northeast.
  6. Celebrating the Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award Winners
    Rushiv Arora, Sattwik Das, Anushree Jana, Ryan Lee, Cody Richter, Andrew Romasco, Shreya Sawant, and Vista Sohrab were the winners of our 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Awards.
  7. James Allan, Brian Levine Selected as ACM Fellows
    Professor James Allan and Professor Brian Levine were named as ACM Fellows.
  8. PhD Applicant Support Program
    The PhD Applicant Support Program at Manning CICS returned this year, with 1–1 support available for underrepresented applicants in computer science, and all applicants invited to a live panel webinar with current grad students.
  9. Massenberg Summer STEM Institute: Diversifying the Face of STEM
    UMass magazine features the Massenberg Summer STEM Institute, giving rising 10th graders access to a STEM college experience.
  10. New $20M Center on AI, Aging, and Alzheimer’s
    Professor Deepak Ganesan and Associate Professor Ben Marlin help launch a new center at UMass Amherst to improve in-home care for older adults and individuals with Alzheimer's disease through the use of AI-enhanced technologies. Also see this Globe Opinion article.
