Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences Professor Shlomo Zilberstein has been named a UMass Amherst Spotlight Scholar for his pioneering research on artificial intelligence systems that can operate safely and reliably in complex, real-world settings.
As director of the Resource-Bounded Reasoning Lab, Zilberstein studies how intelligent systems make decisions when faced with uncertainty and limited resources. His work on “metareasoning” equips AI with the ability to assess its own capabilities, recognize when it is exceeding them, and seek human help, with applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to planetary exploration.
“I’m working on designing AI that is trustworthy and efficient and can be combined with the strengths of humans to enhance their everyday work in productive ways,” says Zilberstein.
The 2025 recipient of the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award, Zilberstein is also a fellow of both the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), reflecting longstanding contributions to the field.
