Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) Professor and Associate Chair of Faculty Development, Alexandra Meliou, has been elected vice chair of the Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD) for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Her four-year term began on July 1, 2025.
Founded in 1976, SIGMOD focuses on the principles, techniques, and applications of database management systems and technologies. SIGMOD officers, elected by the membership, are responsible for fostering communication and collaboration within the SIGMOD community and with other technical groups, overseeing events such as conferences, symposia, and workshops, and administering SIGMOD’s various programs, activities, and publications.
As vice chair, Meliou aims to build on the community’s existing strengths while fostering improvements and enhancing diversity. “Our community has led important innovations, and I hope to maintain and build upon our institutions and processes that work well, while I work to build consensus towards improvements in areas that need it,” says Meliou. “We should further work to expand and diversify our membership and ensure that new and junior members of our community feel included and valued.”
Meliou has made several contributions to SIGMOD and the broader data management research community through several organizational roles. Most recently, she served as SIGMOD program committee co-chair and executive committee member in 2024, chair of DBCares (Database Community Actions for Respect, Equity, and Support), and co-chair of the Joint Database Task Force on Reviewing Processes.
“I have found immense joy in these roles, and I am enthusiastic to further my service and contributions to the community,” she adds.
Meliou joined the CICS faculty as an assistant professor in 2012. She has received several recognitions for research, teaching, and service, including the ACM SIGMOD Comprehensive Reproducibility Award, a Communications of the ACM Research Highlight, an ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award, and an ACM SIGMOD Research Highlight Award.
