Sunghoon “Ivan” Lee, a Donna M. and Robert J. Manning Faculty Fellow and associate professor of computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and biomedical engineering, has been named editor-in-chief of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (EMBC) Proceedings, the flagship publication of the world’s largest biomedical engineering conference.

Calling the appointment a “full-circle moment,” Lee says, “Since my student days, EMBC has been a cornerstone of my academic journey. Now I have the privilege of giving back by helping shape the conference’s scientific quality and future direction.”

In his new role, Lee will oversee the review and selection of nearly 3,000 research papers each year, maintaining rigorous standards while highlighting pioneering domains such as the role of artificial intelligence in biomedical engineering. He also plans to launch new “Best Paper” and “Best Reviewer” awards and broaden participation in the peer review process to include early-career researchers and doctoral students.

“EMBC is where the global biomedical engineering community comes together to share transformative ideas,” Lee says. “The Proceedings capture those ideas, and my goal is to ensure they reflect the full breadth, depth, and ambition of our field.”

Lee has been part of EMBC’s editorial team since 2021 and is recognized internationally for his work on wearable biomedical sensors and systems.

“Lee’s vision and leadership will strengthen the impact of the EMBC Proceedings and advance the Society’s mission,” says Erika Ross Ellison, 2026 president of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS).

More information about IEEE EMBC Proceedings, including an interview with Lee, can be found on EMBS.org.
