Registration Updates
Fall & Summer 2025 Registration Updates
This page will list updates or issues affecting registration in CICS, COMPSCI, and INFO courses.
If you are unable to enroll yourself in a class, please make sure to first read the error message and the class notes on SPIRE. Do not email instructors, as they aren't able to assist you with registration issues.
Eligible non-CS and non-INFORM majors will have the opportunity to enroll after new students have registered (anticipated to be end of July or early August). Eligible non-majors should wait for the major eligibility restriction to be removed to self-enroll or add to the waitlist (if available) and should not request an override. Students needing special permission or who are still having unexpected issues enrolling should submit an override request via the Override Form.
COMPSCI Courses
Anticipated updates for current courses
COMPSCI 220, 230, 240, 250, 311, 320, 326, 328, AND 345 - saved seats
Seats previously reserved for incoming students will be released closer to class start for most of these courses, depending on the amount of available seats. Non-CICS majors, such as CS minors, may have the opportunity to be enrolled at that time. Students needing special permission must request an override via the online form.
COMPSCI 220: we do not anticipate that seats will be released due to current enrollment levels.

COMPSCI 590Q
COMPSCI 590Q Quantum Information Systems (3 credits), added to SPIRE on 4/17/2025
Instructor: Stefan Krastanov
Fundamentals of quantum information systems, including quantum computation and quantum cryptography. Topics include: quantum circuit model, qubits, unitary operators, measurement, entanglement, quantum algorithms for factoring and search, quantum key distribution, error-correction and fault-tolerance, complexity of quantum computation. This course counts as a CS Elective for the CS Major (BA or BS). Prerequisites: UNDERGRADUATES: MATH 235 WITH A GRADE OF C OR BETTER. Eligibility: LEC 01: JUNIOR AND SENIOR CS MAJORS ONLY.; LEC 02: MS-CMPSCI STUDENTS ONLY.
Class Notes: MEETS WITH COMPSCI 648. LEC 01 FOR UNDERGRADS; LEC 02 FOR GRADS. KNOWLEDGE OF QUANTUM MECHANICS IS NOT A PREREQUISITE; QUANTUM CONCEPTS WILL BE INTRODUCED AS NEEDED. BACKGROUND SHOULD INCLUDE FAMILIARITY WITH CALCULUS (MATH 131, 132), KNOWLEDGE OF SOME PROBABILITY AND DISCRETE MATH. KNOWLEDGE OF ALGORITHMS AND COMPLEXITY ARE NOT PREREQUISITES; WILL BE INTRODUCED AS NEEDED. STUDENTS NEEDING SPECIAL PERMISSION MUST REQUEST OVERRIDES VIA THE ON-LINE FORM: https://www.cics.umass.edu/academics/course-overrides
CICS Courses
CICS 110, 160, AND 210
Eligible non-CS and non-INFORM majors may have the opportunity to enroll closer to class start, depending on the amount of open seats in each course. Eligible non-majors should wait for the major eligibility restriction to be removed to self-enroll and SHOULD NOT REQUEST AN OVERRIDE.
INFO Courses
INFO 150
On Friday, June 6, eligible undergraduates who are non-CS and non-Math (Stats) majors will be able to enroll themselves in this course. Students should wait for the current major eligibility restriction to be updated and attempt to enroll themselves and should not request an override. (Prospective Informatics applicants who are CS or Math (Stats) majors may submit an override request.)
INFO 203
On Friday, June 6, eligible undergraduates who are non-CS majors will be able to enroll themselves in this course. Students should wait for the current major eligibility restriction to be updated and attempt to enroll themselves and should not request an override.
INFO 248
On Friday, June 6, all eligible undergraduates will be able to enroll themselves in this course this summer. Non-INFORM majors should wait for the current major eligibility restriction to be updated and attempt to enroll themselves and should not request an override.
INFO 348
Eligible undergraduates may be able to enroll themselves in this course this summer. If there are available seats, the current major eligibility restriction may be removed near the first week of fall classes. Since this is a required course for Informatics students with the Data Science concentration, we cannot guarantee seats for non-INFORM majors.

INFO 490PI
INFO 490PI Personal Health Informatics (4 credits), added to Spire on 7/23/2025
Instructor: Ravi Karkar
This course is normally offered in Spring semesters, but due to unexpected circumstances, it will only be offered in Fall for academic year 2025-2026. It will not be offered Spring 2026.
This course will cover the design of personal health and wellness technologies. Using the personal health informatics model, we will learn various challenges in designing technologies for personal health data collection (e.g., step count, heart rate, or food intake etc.), integration, self-reflection, and behavior change. Going further, students will understand design issues in sharing personal health data and discuss design guidelines for collaborative data collection, reflection, and care. It is difficult to create health technologies that can successfully be integrated into people's daily life due to many obstacles in individuals' data collection, integration, self-reflection, and sharing practices. Understanding these challenges is an important part of designing Health Technologies. Therefore, this course will cover HCI and design thinking methods that students can leverage to understand the adoption and use of Health Technologies and to design effective Health Technologies. Moreover, visualizations facilitate people to gain insights from their data, so we will cover common visualization approaches used in the personal data contexts. Students will apply the design issues taught during lecture to a team-based semester-long personal health application design project. This course satisfies the IE requirement for Informatics majors and also counts as an elective for all concentrations of the Informatics major. Prerequisites: INFO 248 (or COMPSCI 240) with a grade of C or better, and a grade of C or better in either COMPSCI 328, COMPSCI 348, INFO 348, or INFO 390C. Eligibility: Open to junior and senior INFORM students.
Course notes: NO PASS/FAIL OPTION. SATISFIES INTEGRATIVE EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT FOR CS AND INFORM MAJORS. ALSO SATISFIES A CS400 ELECTIVE FOR CS MAJORS. BEGINNING SPRING 2024, GRADES OF C OR BETTER ARE REQUIRED IN PREREQUISITES. WILL OPEN TO JUNIOR AND SENIOR CS MAJORS AFTER JUNIOR AND SENIOR INFORM MAJORS ARE GIVEN OPPORTUNITY TO ENROLL. ELIGIBLE CS MAJORS SHOULD NOT REQUEST AN OVERRIDE, BUT WAIT FOR ELIGIBILITY TO OPEN TO SELF-ENROLL. STUDENTS NEEDING SPECIAL PERMISSION MUST REQUEST OVERRIDES VIA THE ON-LINE FORM: https://www.cics.umass.edu/academics/course-overrides
