Registration Updates

This page will list updates affecting registration in CICS, COMPSCI, and INFO courses such as eligibility changes, saved seats, or course availability.

If you are unable to enroll yourself in a class, first read the error message and the class notes on SPIRE. If you have questions, email your advisor or overrides [at] cs [dot] umass [dot] edu (overrides[at]cs[dot]umass[dot]edu) but don't email instructors, as they cannot assist you with registration. Students needing special permission or who are still having unexpected issues enrolling can submit an override request via the Override Request Form.

Summer 2026 Registration Updates

COMPSCI 250 and 311: Students enrolled in summer session 1 of COMPSCI 250 cannot be overridden into summer session 2 of COMPSCI 311 because there is too much time overlap between the courses. Students taking 250 in summer should plan to take 311 in fall or a future semester. Updated 3/25/26.

Fall 2026 Registration Updates

COMPSCI Courses

COMPSCI 325: Course eligibility will temporarily be set to INFO juniors/seniors only until junior registration ends on Friday, 4/17. By the start of sophomore registration on Tuesday 4/21, the eligibility will open to both CS and INFO juniors/seniors. Updated 3/10/26.

COMPSCI 345: (sections 01 and 02) Course eligibility will temporarily be set to INFO juniors/seniors only until junior registration ends on Friday, 4/17. By the start of sophomore registration on Tuesday 4/21, the eligibility will open to both CS and INFO juniors/seniors. Updated 3/10/26.

COMPSCI 348: Due to staffing changes this course is not activated for registration. There is a possibility the course will be removed from the schedule. Because its status is uncertain, it isn't an override option at this time. Updated 4/6/26.

COMPSCI 420: A reserve has been set which will hold 5 seats for juniors. In some cases, SPIRE may prevent seniors from registering if there are not enough juniors enrolled. Updated 4/8/26.

CICS Courses

CICS 110: After eligible CS, INFORM, MATH, PHYSICS, CMPLING AND STATS + DATA SCI majors have enrolled, will open to all undergraduate freshmen, sophomore, and juniors, if available seats. Freshmen, sophomore, and juniors in other majors should wait for the eligibility restriction to be removed to self-enroll and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

CICS 160: After eligible CS, INFORM and COMP LING majors have enrolled, will open to other majors, if available seats. Eligible non-majors should wait for the major elibility restriction to be removed to self-enroll and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

CICS 210: After eligible CS, INFORM, and COMP LING majors have enrolled, will open to other Freshman, Sophomore and Juniors, if available seats. Eligible students in other majors should wait for the major eligibility restriction to be removed to self-enroll and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

INFO Courses

INFO 101: After new and transfer student registration is completed, will open to all non-CS undergraduates. Non-Majors should wait to self-enroll or add to the waitlist (if available) and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

INFO 150: After new and transfer student registration is completed, will open to all non-CS undergraduates. Non-Majors should wait to self-enroll or add to the waitlist (if available) and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

INFO 203: After new and transfer student registration is completed, will open to all non-CS undergraduates. Non-Majors should wait to self-enroll or add to the waitlist (if available) and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

INFO 248: After new and transfer student registration is completed will open to other majors. Non-Majors should wait to self-enroll or add to the waitlist (if available) and should not request an override. Updated 4/9/26.

INFO 324: When the initial registration period ends in late April, eligibility will open to include CS majors. CS majors with the prerequisite should enroll themselves in the class after the eligibility changes and shouldn't submit an override request. Updated 4/2/2026.
