Synthesis Project Proposal Form

Please note: Synthesis Proposals are due no later than the mid-semester date in the semester before the portfolio is submitted.

A synthesis project must combine two research areas such that different techniques from the areas are brought together to attack some problem. More information about "different areas" is available in the Department's Graduate Program Web pages. It is important that the project represent an intellectual stretch to bring the areas together.

Areas & Advisors
What are the two areas that make up this Synthesis Project? Specify advisor's department if not CS, and school if not UMass, in the advisor field
A third area is optional and unusual.
Advisor 1's Department Affiliation (list only if NOT CICS)
Advisor 2's Department Affiliation (list only if NOT CICS)
A third advisor is optional and unusual.
Advisor 3's Department Affiliation (list only if NOT CICS)
Basis_for_Synthesis
Why is this project a synthesis of the two areas? You should indicate how integrating (synthesizing) the areas above is an intellectual stretch. Are these areas that never publish together? Is this an application of new ideas from one area to a problem in another, but an application that has never been tried? The greater the difference between areas, the less you need to say here. If there is regularly published research that combines the two areas, you need to provide more support for why your project is a stretch.
