Computer Systems Engineering Majors and 230

CSENG Majors who have completed ECE 373 (C or better) in Fall 2017 or later, may petition to bypass COMPSCI 230 for the CS Major/CS Minor, or to bypass a 230 prerequiste.  The Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) will review course content periodically to ensure that 230 material is being sufficiently covered.**

Approval allows students to bypass the 230 prerequisite for upper-level CS courses (via override, subject to available seats) and waive the 230 requirement for the CS Major/CS Minor, as follows:

CS Major - BS:
The waiver of 230 satisfies the core requirement for the BS.

CS Major - BA:
The waiver of 230 satisfies one of the three core requirements for the BA.  The three ECE courses cannot be used as part of the Four Course Outside Concentration.

CS Minor:
The waiver of 230 satisfies one of the two 200-level "core", allowing CSENG majors to take one 200-level "core" and two other CS courses (after 187 or equivalent) to complete the CS minor.

Submit the 230 Bypass Form (new form coming soon) after completing ECE 373** with a C or better, to upd@cs.umass.edu.

**October 2018:  The UPC reviewed recent changes to the CSENG curriculum and determined that the 230 Bypass will only require ECE 373 with a C or better, beginning with the Fall 2017 offering.  This revision may result in a substitute of ECE 373 for 230 for both CS Major/Minor requirements instead of a waiver (still under review).  For students who have completed ECE 373 prior to Fall 2017, ECE 232, ECE 353, and ECE 373 will all be required with a C or better.
