Gwyn Mitchell came to work in Computer & Information Science in 1972 before it became an official department. She worked for chair Michael Arbib when carbon paper and ditto machines were used to make copies, typewriters ruled, and email had not been invented.  In the 1980s she left UMass for an extended maternity leave and returned to the Department of Computer Science in 1990.  She worked for years with Beverly Woolf and CKC's animation classes, as well as Andy Barto's neural network group and the Autonomous Learning Lab as UMass and federal funding agencies became highly computerized.  Nowadays Mitchell is 'retired' and works mostly for the Center for Data Science.
