Biography

Jim Flynn reports to Dean Laura Haas. He is responsible for building research relationships for the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS). He is leveraging UMass Amherst's Mount Ida campus in Newton, MA to establish CICS in the Boston area, which is one of the world's most innovative business, technological, and education hubs. He drives strategies that support the dean's objectives and the college's vision of Computing for the Common Good while promoting the university's service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Flynn began his career as a software developer at AT&T where he also worked as a hardware engineer before becoming a national account executive. He has started, built and sold multiple software companies in banking, document management, payments, and online media. He served as the Chief Operating Officer of a public company and a subsidiary of Pitney Bowes. Although his professional background spans numerous domains, from purely technical to sales and corporate leadership, his favorite job titles are dedicated dad of four and devoted husband. He has also worked as a journalist for major technical publications, served as an expert witness for patent litigation, and was the principal author of one of the first books on Java programming. He earned a BS with magna cum laude honors from Manhattan College, where he was the captain of the Division 1 wrestling team. He also has an MBA with concentrations in finance and international business from New York University.
