Research

Pubali's research interest is in securing emerging computing platforms. Modern computing systems are constantly growing in size and complexity, and layers of abstraction have helped us design these systems.  However, as core design primitives are obscured, these indirections can also engender new security challenges. Pubali's research looks past these abstractions to study the core functionalities of modern computing systems. Through identifying the security and privacy challenges within these systems, she is able to design mechanisms that prevent security violations while meeting the design and operational requirements of system users. She primarily works in the areas of Emerging Cloud Architectures, Internet of Things, and Threat Intelligence. Her research detects, deters and investigates security attacks within large complex systems through the means of access control, information flow analysis, and auditing.

Biography

Pubali Datta is an assistant professor in the College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in August 2023. Pubali has conducted research on a variety of security topics, including serverless cloud security, IoT security, system auditing and provenance. Her dissertation is in the area of serverless cloud security, particularly in designing information flow control, access control and auditing mechanisms for serverless platforms. Pubali has earned her M.E. degree from Jadavpur University and B.Tech. degree from West Bengal University of Technology in India.

Activities & Awards

Pubali's work is published in top security venues and her work has been honored with the Distinguished Paper Award at IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in 2023. Pubali has participated in research collaborations with industry partners such as Samsung Research America, and VMware. She was selected as an EECS Rising Star in 2020 and was invited to talk at Rising Stars in Computer Science talk series in 2022.  She is committed to advancing the role of women and under-represented groups in computer science.
