Shenoy Honored with ACM SIGMETRICS 2016 Test of Time Award
Prashant Shenoy, professor of computer science, has been awarded the 2016 ACM SIGMETRICS Test of Time Award for his research paper on multi-tier Internet services, which he co-wrote with Ph.D. student Bhuvan Urgaonkar ('02 M.S., '05 Ph.D.) and researchers at IBM.
The SIGMETRICS Test of Time Award recognizes an academic paper published in Proceedings of ACM SIGMETRICS that has been deemed to have a significant impact on the advancement of the research community 10-12 years after its publication. Shenoy's paper, "An Analytical Model for Multi-Tier Internet Services and Its Applications," focuses on the problem of analytically modeling the behavior of online applications by presenting a model based on a network of queues; these queues, in turn, represent different tiers of such an application.
Originally published in 2005, the group's paper has since been referenced by computer scientists and engineers worldwide, serving as an influential work that has shed light on the consistent growth of online applications in all aspects of contemporary society.
SIGMETRICS is the ACM Special Interest Group for the computer systems performance evaluation community. Shenoy and his collaborators will receive the award at the group's annual conference held June 15-17, 2016 in Juan-les-Pin, France.
