Alexander Wolf elected President of the ACM

ACM (The Association for Computing Machinery) announced the election of Alexander L. Wolf (Ph.D. '85) as ACM President for a two-year term beginning July 1.

President Wolf said he is committed to creating a climate in which fresh ideas are generated to address the challenges confronting ACM in the rapidly evolving computing community.  He cited as top priorities the rise of computer-mediated, cost-free, dynamic social networks as well as the forces reshaping relationships among authors, readers, reviewers, publishers and libraries.

Wolf, a Professor with a Chair in Computing at Imperial College London, is known for seminal contributions to software architecture and deployment, as well as automated process discovery, an area related to the business intelligence field.  He helped shape ACM's role in advancing the educators, practitioners, researchers and students at the core of computing through his active participation.  He was Secretary/Treasurer of ACM, and served as chair of the ACM SIG Governing Board.  He currently serves on the ACM Europe Council, and is past chair of the ACM Software System Award Committee.  Named an ACM Fellow, Wolf is a Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society and holds a UK Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award.

ACM is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, uniting computing educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field's challenges.

Wolf's Previous positions include professor at the University of Lugano, Switzerland, professor and C.V. Schelke Endowed Chair of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Labs.

His expertise is in experimental and theoretical computer science, including software engineering, distributed systems, networking, and databases. He is known for seminal contributions to software architecture, software deployment, automated process discovery (the seed of the business intelligence field), distributed publish/subscribe communication, and content-based networking.

Formerly Vice President of ACM, Wolf is a member of the ACM Council and ACM Executive Committee as well as ACM Europe Council. He previously served as Secretary-Treasurer of ACM and chaired the ACM SIG Governing Board and the ACM Software System Award Committee. He also served as vice chair and chair of ACM SIGSOFT, and was a member of the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology and IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering.

Wolf is a Fellow of ACM and IEEE, a Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society, and holder of a UK Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award. He is a recipient of two ACM SIGSOFT Research Impact Awards, and of both the ACM SIGSOFT Outstanding Research Award and Distinguished Service Award. He is also an ACM Distinguished Speaker.

Wolf holds MS and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and is a recipient of the Computer Science Department's Outstanding Achievement in Research Alumni Award.
