CICS Welcomes Two New Faculty in Spring 2020

CICS welcomes two new faculty in spring 2020. In addition to the new faculty listed below, Ivon Arroyo was hired as an associate professor in 2019 and arrived on campus in January.

George Bissias, Research Assistant Professor
Starting January 2020

George Bissias’s research focuses on using statistical inference to measure user participation in p2p networks, development and deployment of DpComp, a benchmark suite for differentially private algorithms, and investigation of techniques for improving the security and scalability of Bitcoin. Previously, Bissias worked as a research scientist at CICS for Professors Brian Levine and Gerome Miklau, and spent several years working at mobile advertising startup Fiksu and distributed database startup Hadapt. He received his PhD in computer science from UMass Amherst in 2010.

Joe (Meng-Chieh) Chiu, Teaching Faculty
Starting January 2020

Joe (Meng-Chieh) Chiu’s research focuses on program phase detection and prediction, dynamic CPU clock frequency adjustment, and garbage collection. Chiu was previously a teaching fellow at CICS and contributed to classes including CS187, CS220, and CS230. He holds a PhD in computer science from UMass Amherst. He also holds an MS from the Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia Program at National Taiwan University, and a BS in computer science and information engineering from National Chung Cheng University.
