The UMass Amherst provost, in coordination with the chancellor and deans of the university’s colleges and schools, launched a new initiative to support interdisciplinary research in Spring 2020, with the goal of empowering creative collaborations, especially those that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. These interdisciplinary faculty research awards grant up to $40,000 to teams of faculty members from at least two different colleges within the university. Special preference was given to projects that address large-scale problems with significant societal impact. Of the sixteen teams chosen, three include members of the College of Information and Computer Sciences faculty.

  • David Jensen, professor: "Understanding and predicting human response to personalized severe weather warnings for urban flash floods"
  • Andrew Lan, assistant professor: "Monitoring INdividual Differences in MAth Problem Solving (MIND-MAPS): Using Technology to Transform Math Learning for Incarcerated Learners"
