Online Optimization with Switching Costs

08 Oct
Tuesday, 10/08/2019 4:00pm to 5:00pm
Computer Science Building Room 140
Theory Seminar

Online optimization is a powerful framework at the intersection of optimization, operations research, machine learning, and algorithms, that has seen numerous applications to problems in distributed systems. This framework has been successfully applied to a broad range of applications including dynamic capacity management in data centers, geographical load balancing among data centers, demand response, generation planning, energy storage management, and beyond. In this talk, I will highlight both the applications of online optimization and the theoretical progress that has been driven by applications in distributed systems. I will also outline several future research directions from both application
 and theory perspectives.
