4+1 B.S./M.S. Computer Science Accelerated Degree Program

For the strongest computer science undergraduates at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as well as at the participating five-colleges, the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) offers an accelerated degree program. 

Eligibility:

  • Students must apply by November 30th during their Junior year (based on credits). Late applications will not be considered. Student's wishing to apply after the deadline may apply through normal admissions channels
  • Students must have a QPA of 3.4 or higher at the time of application to the 4+1 program
  • Students must have completed (or will complete) COMPSCI 311 with a grade or B+ or better (no subsitutions will be considered).

Application decisions and notifications to accepted students will made and sent by January 10th.


Requirements:

  • Students must complete the 129 credit requirement during their senior year: 1. 120 credits for B.S. degree; 2. 9 additional COMPSCI credits at 500+ level
  • Students must take 9 credits at the Graduate level (500+) during their senior year
  • Students must take 6 credits of COMPSCI core requirements during their senior year
  • Students must maintain a 3.4 GPA throughout their junior/senior years
  • Students must complete (if they had not at time of application) COMPSCI 311 with a grade of B+ or better (repeats will not be considered). 

If students meet the requirements, they will submit a formal application to the UMass Graduate School for summer admission after their senior year. GRE requirement will be waived. Bay State MS/Scholar program tuition credit will be applied to students who meet the requirement (except for CPE courses)


Summer Enrollment:

  • Students must enroll in 6 credits of approved graduate-level work through CPE the summer after formal application 


M.S. Enrollment:

  • Students must complete the remaining 15 credits during their first year of M.S. enrollment
  • Students must complete the remaining M.S degree requirements per program outline
  • Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA

Acclerated status may be rescinded for those students who do not maintain the GPA minimum through their final semester or who do not complete requirements stated above.
